Encapsulated diode package offers increased reliability, robustness

DETROIT, March 5, 2001 – Tricon Industries, Inc. is producing a robust encapsulated diode package for use in passenger car and truck electrical circuits. This single diode package is designed and manufactured with a process that increases diode reliability. High-temperature plastic encapsulation and heat-conducting terminals provide a safe environment for the insert-molded diode. Electrical operation is assured with redundant electrical connections to the diode wires.

The new diode package withstands rough customer handling, high temperatures and circuit overloading. By using Tricon's improved encapsulated diode package, the customer will experience better reliability. "The improved heat resistance and increased reliability of the encapsulated diodes will make these assemblies last longer than ever," said Rick Zech, Tricon sales manager.

Two large terminals extend from the package to provide electrical connections. These terminals must mate with receptacles in a circuit fuse block. Insert molding terminals into the diode body controls the location of these precision stamped parts and produces consistent diode modules with terminals that meet all location requirements.

Tricon Industries produces several versions of these encapsulated diode packages used in different vehicles. Changing inserts in the housing mold creates different polarizing features on the molded body. Internal connections to the semiconductor diode wires are both welded and crimped to a stamped metal circuit frame providing redundant electrical connections. This circuit frame and diode assembly is then insert molded in plastic. Nylon thermoplastic material, with its high temperature rating, is used for the package insulator material. A robust, one-piece, sturdy part is created with the metal terminals protecting the diode from heat degradation and providing electrical connections.

Electrical tests are performed on each diode module to assure the part performance is correct. Using these robust manufacturing processes creates less scrap and reduces costs.

Manufacture of parts like this encapsulated diode module for harsh environments is a core business for Tricon Industries. Tricon has the design ability, manufacturing skills and experience in insert molding to form a partnership with customers interested in improving their products.

Tricon Industries, Inc. specializes in insert molding and specialized components for worldwide automotive, mobile communications and appliance markets. Tricon was one of the first in the industry to use insert-molding techniques for the manufacture of switch and relay components as well as other electrically-oriented parts.

Some of Tricon's recent projects include complex insert molded junction blocks and multifunction switch components, sealed taillight bulb sockets and circuit stampings, single-bulb sockets, insert-molded alternator parts, encapsulated components and mobile antenna assemblies. Today, Tricon is a QS-9000 / ISO 9001-registered manufacturer with comprehensive design, project management and manufacturing capabilities that can be tailored to specific project requirements.
