LEDs

We believe LEDs have a solid future in automotive lighting applications. Because LEDs are highly durable and adaptable to 42-volt systems, Tricon engineers are exploring using them for exterior/interior lighting applications including rear high-mounted stop lamps. The outstanding durability of LEDs means that the technology also is a perfect fit for today’s 12-volt lighting applications. In fact, LEDs are already meeting many current automotive needs and continue to gain acceptance.

Tricon has concepts on the drawing board that take advantage of LEDs’ extreme long life in key applications such as center high mounted stop lamps (CHMSL). New concepts include a LED diffusion housing and universal bayonet-mounted LED that could make this lighting technology more practical for a greater number of automotive lighting applications.

LEDs, with their more robust design, are better suited to thrive in high-voltage systems, and heat issues can be addressed through design innovations. They also generate light much faster than incandescent lamps, which can be a crucial safety feature in stop lamp applications. Tricon has developed a LED design using a universal socket concept that could make it possible to make a running change over to LED lamps.
